Mantra Japa: The Discipline Behind the Sound

Count, time, posture and consistency matter more than volume. A short guide to beginning a japa practice that survives the second week.

Most people who take up mantra japa stop within a fortnight. Almost always the cause is the same: they began with a count they could not sustain.

Start smaller than you think

A mala of 108 repetitions, once a day, done every day for a year, will do more than 11 malas attempted twice and abandoned. Swamiji's standing instruction to new practitioners is to halve whatever number they first propose.

The shape of a session

Sit facing east or north, at the same time each day — brahma muhurta if you can, but a fixed time you will actually keep is worth more than an ideal time you will not. Keep the spine upright and the mala in the right hand, moved with the thumb over the middle finger, never over the index finger. Do not cross the meru bead; turn the mala and come back.

Voice, whisper, silence

The tradition ranks japa in three grades: spoken aloud, whispered, and purely mental — each considered more potent than the last. Beginners should start aloud. The mind wanders less when the mouth is occupied, and the pronunciation settles into the body before it is taken inward.

Which mantra

For graha shanti, the beeja mantra of the relevant planet, counted according to the prescribed number. For general practice, the mantra of your ishta devata, received from a teacher. Mantras that involve fierce deities or specific tantric procedures should not be picked up from books or the internet; they carry conditions.

The honest expectation

The first change most people report is not external. It is that the mind becomes slightly less noisy, and difficulties arrive with a little more space around them. The outer results follow, in the time the chart allows.
